It is not the most intellectual of the species that survives; it is not the strongest that survives; but the species that survives is the one that is able best to adapt and adjust to the changing environment in which it finds itself. – Charles Darwin
Although Darwin was referring to the animal world, I think it greatly applies to the adult world, especially in a career setting.
You should always adapt to your career and the work environment you’re in.
Now, the big caveat here is that you must have done enough research to form a strong conviction that the company you joined will one day succeed. The vectors that you look at could be the industry, the business model, the founders background, the industry landscape, the product’s technical moats or others.
Once you have done your research and formed a strong conviction, all that’s left for you to do is to adapt to the growing needs of the company.
Are you needed in sales? Go do client demos. Pay the client a visit. Do everything you can to close.
Are you needed in marketing? Go write articles. Launch marketing campaigns that will generate awareness and increase your web traffic. Do everthing you can to get leads.
Are you needed in product? Go talk to customers. Conduct growth experiments from well-grounded hypothesis and improve your north star metric. Do everything you can to reduce churn.
If you really have a strong conviction with your “bet” on the company you joined, it wouldn’t be hard to change your direction and adapt to make the company successful.
