Investment Mindset Switch
"You're already doing a good job by surviving in 2020."
A lot of people joke about this and I think there sure is some merits to it. But I want to share some thinking about investing in the context of a worldwide pandemic.
A popular framework for "investing" or managing money is the 10-80-10 rule. You allocate 10% of your net worth to insurance assets, 80% to investment assets, and the remaining 10% to speculative assets. Your insurance assets could be something like Gold or other commodities. Your investment assets could be real estate that provide rental income or dividend stocks that generate dividend income. While your speculative asset could be wild bets like vaccine companies, crypto, or coal mine companies.
In a worldwide pandemic where everything changes, maybe this popular investment strategy should change too.
For any enterprising young man who's not as affected by the pandemic financially, I think this unique period of time is a perfect opportunity to rethink your strategy.
The markets are not logical nor rational in any way now. Why play by the same rules and stay conservative with growth?
What if you change your strategy into 30-40-30? Take more risk while also having more insurance. With the bulk of your portfolio still being in sound investment assets, let your speculative assets run wild.
